Dinner at Otto.

This past week was Restaurant Week in Singapore. I had no idea that there was even such an event until June asked me if I would be interested in dining at some of the participating restaurants. I’m very much an eat to live person, and won’t travel for food unless it’s things I really like such as crab, so I was only half-enthusiastic about joining her. After some back-and-forthing, we settled on Otto, an Italian restaurant at red dot on Maxwell Road. I knew nothing about this restaurant, only that we were going to have the Restaurant Week set, so I had no expectations whatsoever.

Eating to live means I rarely encounter exceptional service at the places I dine at, so the service at Otto was pleasingly prompt and courteous without being obtrusive. The food was fairly good, too.

The set for the evening. Both June and I chose the fish for our main course.

Tomino Grigliato con Porcini Saltati e Prosciutto di Parma - or simply, prosciutto ham stacked on a cheesy mushroomy thingy. I liked this, but both June and I found the prosciutto too salty.

Filetto di Halibut con Crema di Scampi e Spinacini Novelli aka fish on a bed of bayam. Which June, for some reason, thought was arugula.

Tortino Tiepido al Cioccolato con Gelato alla Vaniglia, which I would translate as a tepid tart of chocolate with vanilla ice cream.

I guess the epicurean set appreciates fancy schmancy names for grub, but me, I really like the menu to state what I’m about to eat clearly and comprehensibly without having to read an appended translation. This and my inability to stick my pinky in the air elegantly are among the many reasons I can never be a tai-tai.

  1. Haha! I can’t identify most vegetables!

I had lunch at Garibaldi yesterday, as a part of restaurant week, as well. Very good food! I had squid pasta with crab – excellent. Everything about it was good, from the texture of the al dente pasta, to the sauce of the pasta, everything was lip-smacking.

There was a salad – that preceded the pasta – with oranges, avocado and prawns. But because the salad had rocket – which I detest because of the bitterness – I discreetly exchanged my mostly uneaten salad with J’s emptied salad plate! Heh… gives the impression that I eat my greens.

The dessert of tiramisu followed after the pasta. It was good, in the Italian sense. Not so sweet and with lots of liqueur. Because I had requested a candle to be put in J’s dessert, the restaurant gave him a complimentary hazelnut semi freddo with a chocolate “Happy Birthday” block and a tall candle. This semi freddo was just delicious!

Their bread was also very good!

All in all, a very good outing, and I’d go there for brunch some time in the future. Not for dinner because it’d think it’d be very very expensive.

I think I’d go there again, should there be a good reason too. Heh…. which means, a live to eat person like I am will cook up some reason to!
