Heavy weight.
I went for a health check today and surprise, surprise, I am overweight. Here are the dreadful numbers: 1.58m tall and 68.9kg, which makes my BMI 27 (moderate risk) and my body fat percentage is a hefty 35.2% (healthy being 20 to 27%).
How did it come to this? Simple. Put a guy and a girl together, have neither of them cook, have two babies and voila! You have the perfect recipe for putting on weight. Prior to meeting K, my weight fluctuated between 55 and 58kg – my ideal weight being the latter. 12 years and two children on, I am 10kg heavier than I ought to be. To put it succinctly, I am fat.
So, what to do about it? The equation is simple, but the process is not. Eat less, burn more through exercise, and I’ll eventually weigh less. But it’s easier said than done. For one, I have little time to exercise. For another, exercise triggers my asthma. I mentioned this to the doctor and she advised me to puff on my Ventolin inhaler before I start exercising, which I can do, but which also means I will be even more reliant on the inhaler than I am right now. Not a good thing.
But I guess it has to be done. Better to be reliant on the inhaler than to develop chronic diseases as a result of being overweight, right? I am OK for the moment – my blood pressure is normal, and my sugars too. Don’t know about my cholesterol since that wasn’t tested today. This might all change when I hit the magic age of 40, so essentially I have the next 8 years to buck up and lose a few.
As if to encourage me to get fit by doing something, anything, yoga, pilates, swimming, whatever – K presented me with a Power Balance bracelet this evening. Local athletes swear by it – it’s supposed to boost your core strength, balance and flexibility. Supposedly. There are many websites that say it’s a scam, and just as many people swearing by it, so I don’t know. But hey, even if it doesn’t work, new (and pink!) wrist swag never hurt.
Back to the topic of fat and fit. Right now, I’m exercising only once a week for an hour each time – by this I mean participating in a group exercise class and not walking around Ion Orchard on a shopping spree. I need to get that up to three times a week, so I’m going to swim while Alison is having her swim class. Buy some ear plugs so I don’t have to hear Tankinimom. I would love to run, but school races of yore have proven that I’m a sprinter, not a jogger, so that’s something I’ll have to think about. I’m already eating quite healthily so am not sure what else to change in that department.
If you have tips on how to lose 10kgs without taking Xenical, Reductil, bingeing, purging or starving, please share them with me!

Cycle wit’chor hubby. Sure to get fit quick.
/sigh/ I’m in the same boat but I’m a few years older than you so it’s even harder for me to take off the weight! Anyway, I started exercising on the weekends and trying to eat less. I know I tend to overeat….
Good luck, sister!! You can do it!
Want to be fit or just focus on losing weight? We did the Sonoma Diet, and my dh lost a lot of weight and so far so good, didn’t gain back. Didn’t really exercise too, cos really, who has the time?!
@Angela Both, actually. If I lose weight and don’t tone up, I’ll be flabby and that’s like going back to square one…
Have u tried the Blood Type Diet?
You n Hsien n me, how about we do it together?
forgot to mention that interval training is supposed to help.
How about starting off by walking? Not that I have lost any weight *I don’t think* but walking an hour everyday (and it’s brisk walking mind you) to and from school has sorta helped in the keeping fit department. For me lah….
I’m reading dr Andrew Weil’s books and find them helpful. You might want to check this out: http://www.amazon.com/Weeks-Optimum-Health-Program-Advantage/dp/034549802X/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1267290482&sr=1-1
I am also using Fitbit – http://client.fitbit.com/
Hey Jean, yoga has helped me tone up and given me strength – both physically and mentally.
Helps me be quiet too, which is something I find difficult.
Want to come to Pure and try it out? My consultant is the non-pushy type (proven as my friends whom I’ve brought before reported back to me!).
can start counting the calories intake and do some yoga. Helps toning up and mild enuff not to make you eat alot after each session. :p that was how i shed 8kg aft childbirth.
Try hot yoga – I find it’s the fastest way to work up a HUGE sweat and I always feel great afterwards. The poses are quite basic so you don’t have to be super flexible to be able to pick it up! I realise a friend of yours has recommended Pure Yoga too – Can also try Bikram Yoga at Raffles City. Just ask them for a trial class first.
Sigh, I need to do some serious tummy trimming exercises too – it’s just not the same after childbirth!
I’m trying to lose weight too. been binge / comfort snacking when the kids drive me up the wall. Which is, really, a daily occurrence. I do think walks around the neighbourhood would help but the weather is NOT helping.
…and bimbotic me thinks the Power Balance bracelet looks mighty nice.
