+1?
I was downloading some gory photos that I’d taken of my face after I covered it with Betadine (I wanted to write a post about ageing and pimples and vanity and the like after meeting a certain someone recently), when the following photos also appeared in iPhotos.
They were taken by K on the Ixus last weekend. As he would say, it warms the cockles of my heart to see the love these two sisters have for each other shining through. It more than makes up for the daily fighting!
The title of this post is not “+1″ because we’re thinking of adding another child to the equation. Oh no, two’s good enough, thank you. What I’m really referring to is the possibility of us getting another dog. The house does feel rather strange without a mutt underfoot, although it is nice to have clean floors and Emily is savouring the luxury of having the bathroom all to herself since the dogs previously did their business in a tray inside the shower area. But there are a few issues:
- Are we ready for another dog so soon after Pepe’s departure? His ashes are not yet cold in his little urn.
- What kind of dog should we get? We know that adopting a dog is better by far than buying one, but we do have strong preferences for certain breeds based on their personalities and looks.
- If we adopt a dog, it would most likely be fully grown and less likely to tolerate children.
- Do we really have time to do the dog justice in terms of training and outings etc? After the kids came along, we more or less left the walking to Emily to do, and the frequency of trips to the park and beach decreased dramatically. A new dog would also need obedience classes and daily training.
- The floors will not be clean even though Em steams them twice a day. Shoelaces will be chewed, there will be accidents of the toileting kind. There will be barking. In short, the house will be livelier, but also dirtier.
There are so many dogs who need a home at ASD Singapore, Mdm Wong’s Shelter, Animal Lovers League and Pets Channel that buying a dog just seems like such a waste. And yet.
Lots of thinking to do for a very big decision to make.

Miko was adopted and is just fine around other animals and people, including kids that want to pet her in the street. I think you have to find the right dog and be patient enough to wait for it to appear. In Miko’s case, my criteria were that the dog be intelligent, house-tained and have a sweet nature. Got all 3 and no regrets!
You’re welcomed to consider Jaws, if you want. And it’s never too soon to adopt a dog actually. I think it’s always nice to have a pet running about in the house.
These pictures are so precious la! =) The Small Thing has such an infectious smile!
Thanks for the offer, but we’re really looking at non-toy breeds. Plus, Jaws has a tendency to live up to her name!
My mutt sheds a whole puppy every day. My house is a shambles (though without the toilet accidents). And I wouldn’t trade it for the world. Happiness is a warm puppy!
