Five years on.
Reading about someone’s new business endeavour made me think back to when K first left the agency he had started with the backing of a local ad agency tycoon because he was so disillusioned and unhappy with said tycoon’s business ethics. I was freelancing as a writer at the time, and we had debts and a toddler to look after. Those were hairy days for our little family because K was earning a good salary and giving that up for nothing was terrifying. But I understood his need to get out, even if it meant plunging into penury. Our situation made us lean a lot on God, praying every day for Him to make a way for us, especially K who prayed a lot for work.
Amazingly, at the time when we needed it most, along came a major local listed company who had heard of K’s reputation for good and fast work. They gave K just one job, but it was the equivalent of one month’s salary. After that, the floodgates opened and things just started snowballing. K could no longer cope with both the admin and creative work. He decided to legitimise things and registered a sole proprietorship. I tried to help him with the invoicing and account management, but was just not cut out for it. Then in stepped C, an old friend who was looking for a change, who practically invited himself to come aboard to help with the admin and finance so that K could concentrate on what he did best.
Five years on, the business is now a private limited company. It is still small with only K, C and a senior art director, but it is financially healthy. I no longer worry about where the month’s money is going to come from, although I do worry about the impact of the downturn on business. We are not rich and we still have some debt, but we are comfortable and can afford nice things for ourselves and the girls. I know that since God has provided for us and opened so many doors during the last five years, He will not forget us now. All that’s needed is just a little bit of faith, and a whole lot of courage to break through the storms to fair weather beyond.
K’s favourite devotional book during this time has been Pastor John Lim’s Praying for Your Job and Business. If you’re starting a new job or business, or just want to commit your endeavours to God, this book is a little gem. You can buy it here.
